Types of coverage

Your appliance may have several layers of protection.

Manufacturer warranty

Most new appliances come with a manufacturer warranty covering defects for a set time. Some parts, like compressors or motors, may have longer coverage.

Extended warranty or service plan

These are sold by stores or third parties. They are contracts with their own rules, deductibles and exclusions.

Credit card protection

Some credit cards extend the manufacturer warranty when you pay with the card. Check your card's benefits guide.

Home warranty

A home warranty is a service contract covering certain home systems and appliances. It usually has a service fee per visit and many exclusions.

Implied warranty

State law may give you basic rights that a product will work as expected for a reasonable time, depending on the state and the sale.
